This is the first in a series of articles on Smartphone Intelligence.
Part one in our series Smartphone AI: When using my Smartphone or as I like to call it my iPhone, I had started to notice a difference in 2017 in the word processing capabilities when texting or emailing. I notice this mostly because I had drowned two previous versions of my iPhones in the ocean (Not Smart).
When I received my latest new iPhone with the most updated operating system version of the same phone; I noticed that the text editor started filling in the words and sentences for me more than the previous versions had and I see that more each day it seems.
I asked Siri are you as Smart as Google?
When I asked Siri are you as Smart as Google? Siri said, “John, I am not really sure?” So what does your smartphone do and what does the Internet and AI do while utilizing your smartphone?
Googles Gmail Experimental Access
I use Google’s Gmail Experimental Access and Smart Compose that uses Machine Learning Neural Networks and Gmail can now autocomplete entire emails with this new feature in Smart Compose.
I also use Google’s Gmail every day at work and it is filling in full sentences now when I type emails with redundant lines to the same people I work with and respond to all of the time. Even though Google apparently cannot afford to make its Gmail spell checker capitalize “i” for proper American English?
For instance when you put in the person’s email address before starting the email, when you type their salutation “Good morning Matt” the name Matt will show up in the salutation before you type it. All you have to do is hit the spacebar and the Tab button and you are onto the next sentence. As you can see in the example below I did, it had typed the name before I did.
So we are seeing machine learning taking over before our very eyes incorporated into our everyday devices.
Personnel Assistant Software
A year ago I was interested in the personal assistant software with Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant and tried them out on my iPhone to see the difference and actually was extremely disappointed in the Google Assistant and the biases it was loaded with. That may just be from the history it accesses or the current trends in the media and what it thinks is prevalent.
Believe me, the technology is amazing to be at this point in our current history so I continue to use them to see what they are capable of. They are obviously only going to continue to grow and learn every day.
Lose the Internet and See How Smart Your Smartphone Is?
The other day we had an accident and the actual cable line was cut to our office internet. Well, where we are in Alaska you are definitely off the grid in many respects the farther you get from towns or cities. Talk about a wakeup call, not too much works these days in certain aspects of computing without the IoT Internet of Things.
If you really want to see what your Smartphone is actually doing shut off the internet for the day. Not too much is the answer to that question. Yes, you still have some amazing cool features like of course your cell phone and a dazzling camera but the Internet of Things is the Key to the big brain experience we are all becoming accustomed to. It is almost like pulling on your pants each day as it is so integral to our lives.
Google Maps Without the Internet
Take for instance Google Maps as it is a great app that has lots of features and is super easy to use. The only problem is if you lose the internet and you want to look at a map or see where you are they are gone from your Smartphone. Yes you can download offline maps but the local maps are only good for 29 days then you have to download them again? What good is that? Or maybe you need more stuff to do and you like that?
Google the Great OZ
To truly integrate with Artificial Intelligence on this level you must surrender your most precious personal information to the real “Great Oz” from the “Wizard of Oz”. But as it says in the Movie pay no attention to that Man Behind the Curtain. Well, the man behind the curtain is Google and is real and wants to know what kind of fillings you have in your mouth and what color toenail polish is your favorite.
What does a new iPhone or Android Smartphone come pre-loaded with today?
Anyone of these even 25 years ago would seem like magic!!!
- Apps that allow from banking to you name it
- Artificial Intelligence
- Audio sensory capability to talk or have a conversation with your onboard computer / AI
- Biometric sensors for fingerprint, iris, and facial authentication recognition
- Bluetooth Hands-free access to wireless devices such as earphones
- Dual aperture cameras capable of recording up to 4K video and photographs
That is barely through D in the Alphabet and that is not a full list through D!!
IoT – Internet of Things
Your Smartphone is now the machine face and conduit to the Internet to access the pipeline of information for us to use. What does the Smartphone of today that actually is rivaling many laptop computers for processing power and speed do best? In many ways, this is actually not a case of your Smartphone doing this but actually the connection with Mobile Data to the Internet of Things and Infiniti.
Mobile Data
Mobile data is Internet content delivered to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets over a wireless cellular connection. Mobile data allows your phone to access the Internet even when you’re not on Wi-Fi. Mobile data gives you an Internet connection anywhere as long as you’re connected to a cellular network.
Think apps, your Internet browser, email and syncing to the cloud. Mobile data usage is measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). There are 1,000 MB in 1 GB of data. Everything you send to (upload) or receive from or (download) the Internet will require some amount of data.
Activity | Data requirement (Values are approximate) |
50kb per message | |
Uploading pictures | 1.5MB per photo |
1-2MB per minute | |
Web surfing | 2.5MB per minute |
Gaming | 1.5MB per minute depending on format |
Music streaming | 1-2MB per minute |
Podcast streaming | 60-100MB per hour, depending on buffering and data quality and compression |
YouTube | 2.5-6MB per minute |
Netflix | 1GB-3GB per hour |
Retail Stores Track You Using Your Smartphone
As far back as 2013 when you walked into a retail store like a Nordstrom, Cabela, or even Family Dollar, you’re being tracked around the store. Not by an over-suspicious security guard, but by the store’s wireless network, using your phone’s Wi-Fi. The store then uses your phone to track you around the store, determine if you’re a repeat visitor, see what departments you visit, and more. If you want to stop it just turn off your Wifi or your Smartphone while you are shopping.
Skynet from the Terminator has an actual Linux Program Now
Skynet Edition Linux Kernel 4.1.15 From Terminator Is Finally Released by Linus Torvalds
From Terminator 2 “Sort of” – “The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 2027. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.”
The Smartphone From Google Dictionary
smart·phone
/ˈsmärtˌfōn/
noun
“a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded applications.”
The Smartphone From Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Smartphones are a class of mobile phones and of multi-purpose mobile computing devices. They are distinguished from feature phones by their stronger hardware capabilities and extensive mobile operating systems, which facilitate wider software, internet (including web browsing[1] over mobile broadband), and multimedia functionality (including music, video, cameras, and gaming), alongside core phone functions such as voice calls and text messaging. Smartphones typically include various sensors that can be leveraged by their software, such as a magnetometer, proximity sensors, barometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer, and support wireless communications protocols such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and satellite navigation.
