Review AfterShokz Aeropex Mini Bone Conduction Headphones

We have tried and written about many Bone Conduction Headphones and their technology over the years on So we wanted to see and review what the best AfterShokz had to offer this year. We decided on a pair of Bluetooth Wireless AfterShokz Aeropex Mini Bone Conduction Headphones and decided on the Cosmic Black color.

We are minimalists by nature and often believe in life; less is more, so we chose the AfterShokz Aeropex Mini Bone Conduction Headphones. The AfterShokz Aeropex Mini’s have a small form factor compared to many other models and types of Bone Conduction Headphones. You can barely feel that you are wearing anything with these headphones, and the sound is excellent.

We also feel that AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones set the pace in the Bone Conduction Headphone arena. AfterShokz is at the forefront of research, development, and design patents for Bone Conduction Headphones.

They currently have a 4.6-star rating on the AfterShokz Website with 4,194 reviews. They are, as described, lightweight and very comfortable. They are an impressive 8th generation bone conduction technology and IP67 waterproof rated, but they are not for swimming and have good 8-Hour battery life.

If you want to know more about and understand the IP67 waterproof rating, please see our article “IP & IPX Ratings For Dust & Waterproof Cell Phone Accessories.”

What’s to like?

If you are new to this technology, bone conduction headphones transmit sound to the inner ear through the bones of the skull, so you can hear your audio content while maintaining situational awareness. This technology lets you hear external sounds around you when walking in a park or running down the street.

So what do we like about the Bluetooth Wireless AfterShokz Aeropex Mini Bone Conduction Headphones? First of all, they are smaller than the standards, fit our heads better, and are less intrusive. The smaller size works well in our Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or internet business meetings because they are small and do not appear like over-the-ear headphones.

The 8th Generation Bone Conduction Technology shows up well on these headphones because they are not only comfortable, but the sound is very clear and good with the small Bone Condition Transducers. The sound is very good and works well in open ear outdoor or indoor conditions. For us, the purpose of Bone Conduction headphones is always to have situational awareness around us and to be able to hear our surroundings.

If we give a set of these headphones a full charge on Sunday, we can leave these on our desk the rest of the week and use them in all our meetings and listening for the full seven days of the week without an additional charge. They also have a unique Magnetic Charging Cable system that we like very much because it is simple and easy and comes with two cables in the box.

What We don’t Like

Voice Microphone

The AfterShokz Aeropex Mini Bone Conduction Headphones work well overall in every area except when we are talking on the phone. We use an iPhone, and due to the speaker on these headphones, no one can hear you very well on the other side. Across the board, no matter who we talk to on the phone with these headphones, they cannot hear you and complain, so you cannot use them on phone conversations.

Our online meetings with Zoom and Microsoft Teams can hear us ok, but the sound is low, garbled, and crackly and is not good.

We are big proponents of Green Electronics and Environmentally Sound Practices in protecting our planet from the garbage in our oceans, lakes, and rivers. The packaging on these headphones, although beautiful, and expensive is way over the top and wasteful. We would like to see all electronics companies worldwide use Green Environmentally Sound Practices in all aspects of the building and packaging of their products.

Single Bluetooth Connection at a Time

Most of our headphones, Bone Conduction or not, can link to at least two (2) wireless devices at a time. For whatever reason, all of the AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones we have tried do not.

Often throughout the day, it is convenient to wirelessly link to our laptop and smartphone simultaneously with our Bluetooth headphones that have that feature. That way, you don’t have to turn everything off, go into Bluetooth on your computer, or shut off buttons and re-pair your headphones with your mobile device or computer to use them again on another often-used device.

Final Thoughts

Overall we gave these Aeropex Bone Conduction Headphones 4-Stars. We like these headphones very much for listening to audiobooks and everyday physical training. Because we love this technology, we have purchased the AfterShokz Opencomm’s with an external microphone, and we will let you know.
